As has been stated before, the Convention of States mission is to grow support for the Article V movement through passionate and educated grassroots activists.
There is no better place to start this growth than in the comfort of your own home, and no better people to teach than your friends and family.
With that in mind, Sarah and Ralph Montemarano, COS supporters from Montvale, invited their son-in-law, State Director Jonathan Viaud, into their home to give a COS presentation to 20 friends and family members.
Calling it the “Tupperware Strategy,” Mr. Montemarano explained that, “The Tupperware party became a highly successful, direct marketing strategy presented as a social event. So why not have COS use the same strategy to energize the grassroots through home meetings organized by the District Captains and volunteers?”
Mr. and Mrs. Montemarano began planning this event by creating a list of friends and family they believed would be interested in learning about COS. Then after picking a date and time for the event, they sent out invitations through e-mail.
To make the event more of a social gathering, similar to Tupperware parties, the Montemaranos told guests that appetizers and libation would be provided prior to the presentation, and coffee and dessert would be served at the conclusion of Jonathan's remarks.
Explaining why she wanted to host this gathering, Mrs. Montemarano said, “I feel that a grassroots effort is important to, informally and in a friendly setting, spread awareness of the Convention of States and what it means for our future and the future of our children and grandchildren.”
Jonathan's presentation provided an overview of Article V, and outlined the need for a convention. He also explained that the only amendments that could be proposed would be to impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and limit the terms of office for its officials and members of congress.
This message seemed to resonate with attendees, and a spirited and thoughtful question-and-answer session followed the conclusion of his remarks.
Mrs. Montemarano believes these type of events are very important for the COS movement.
“We need more people to pick up the baton and volunteer their homes for future gatherings,” she said. “Although we had appetizers, wine, and desserts, a gathering can be as simple as cookies and coffee.”
