Q: How did you hear about COS?
I first heard about Convention of States while listening to Mark Levin on the radio about four years ago. I had never heard of it before, but I was curious to find out more about it. So I did some research, went on the COS website, took a look at some of the videos, and signed the petition.
A few days later, I got a call from a grassroots volunteer asking if I’d like to get more involved with the team. At the time, I didn’t really know how I could help, but I agreed to do what I could.
Q: What attracted you to the COS movement?
I’ve been very worried about the unbelievable amount of debt our country continues to pile up. The federal government doesn’t seem to care about the future burden being left to our grandchildren and great-grandchildren to deal with. One of the main goals of COS is reining-in our out of control spending.
Q: What advice do you have for others who want to get involved?
Probably the most important thing for me was to educate myself about the Constitution and our republic. I actually took a few of the free online courses offered by Hillsdale College, which were terrific. The COS website also has a lot of information and videos that are very helpful. There’s even a COS Youtube channel!
When you’re talking to people about COS, it’s important to know the correct information so we don’t mislead anyone.
Q: How do you know if someone may be a candidate to sign the petition or get involved?
People love to talk about themselves. The secret is to be a good listener. Usually, if politics or the news comes up in a conversation, there’s often some common ground with being a patriotic citizen, no matter if you lean politically left or right.
I’ve found most people care about things like the national debt, term limits for politicians, and government becoming too big. I’m not afraid to talk about it!
If people are interested, I invite them to go to the website, or to come our monthly meet-and-greet the first Sunday of every month at the Dunkin Donuts on River St. in Haverhill.
We have a great group of patriots here in Haverhill!
