Louisiana District Captains Jack Cobb (LA HD 13) and Penny Hart (LA HD 12) were joined by Regional Captain Doyle Chambers at an event Friday, Saturday, and Sunday June 16-18 at Bonnie and Clyde Trade Days in Arcadia, Louisiana.
On Thursday night, June 15, a storm went through North Louisiana, knocking down trees and disrupting the power for 220,000 people in the area of the event. Jack and Doyle lost power, but still made it to the venue Friday. Due to the heat and lack of power, Doyle and his wife evacuated to Texarkana, TX to find the closest hotel with an available room.
Doyle made the long 150 mile drive back to the venue on Saturday morning to help Jack break down the COS booth Sunday morning when a line of severe storms came through again and the event was finally cancelled.
Despite the challenges thrown at the team by the weather and low turn-out, the team managed to get 80 petitions signed. All in all, 80 was pretty good since only about 250 people attended the event over the three day period.
Jack had set up Burma-Shave type signage leading up to the COS booth. After reading the messages, five people walked up to the booth and asked, “Where do I sign?”
The team will give it another try next month when the weather should be better. The busiest time for hurricane season won't be until August.
