I spoke with Jayme Burkhart recently to learn more about of her and her role as State Grassroots Coordinator (GRC) of Texas, and what that entails within the leadership structure in the Convention of States (COS) Project.
Originally from Arizona, Jayme has lived with her husband, Jim, in Katy, Texas for the past 22 years. They are empty-nesters now that their 2 sons have left home. Jayme has enjoyed a 32-year long career as a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines and doesn’t see an end to it anytime soon.
Jayme’s COS journey actually began when she was working a flight years ago. She kept an unclaimed book titled The Liberty Amendments, written by Mark Levin. It was several months later when she had time to read the book. Levin’s profound writings were an epiphany moment for Jayme. Here was something that could save our country from our overreaching government.
A formidable alliance of doctrines was born when Levin’s expertise and passion for the U.S. Constitution and Mark Meckler’s vision to save our country using Article V of the Constitution coalesced. The Convention of States was launched in 2013 by Mark Meckler.
Jayme knew about the COS Project and made the decision to find out more. She began by calling patriots involved in the movement to get more information. The more she heard, Jayme realized she had to join the movement that was igniting hope and purpose to millions of Americans looking to save this great nation. In February of 2015 Jayme took her first step by signing the petition.
Jayme believes the first step in becoming active in any venture is to “show up.” That is just what she did when she became a grassroots activist volunteer in 2015. She showed up for leadership calls, for meetings, to the Capitol, and she showed up to learn and help wherever there was an opportunity.
Jayme was assigned the role as District Captain (DC) TX HD28, then Regional Captain of TX SD18 not long after (check out the areas this encompasses by clicking the links). Jayme was successful in having all the district captains roles filled in her region, a feat not often accomplished. This achievement was recognized and in 2019 she was asked to assume the State Grassroots Coordinator (GRC) role. Jayme “showed up” once again.
The volunteer activists appreciate that the COS mission is too ambitious to be accomplished singularly. At every level throughout the organization, teamwork, and simultaneous roles, have been key to getting the COS resolution passed in 19 states to date. Jayme’s primary role is that of the State Grassroots Coordinator (GRC). She continues in the role of Regional Captain until a volunteer is identified to fill that role. Jayme always offers her assistance wherever it is needed. Currently she is helping with the dissemination of the weekly State Team Meetings.
The State Grassroots Coordinator is a daunting position that Jayme seems to fulfill with ease. She is required to be familiar with the COS mission, as well as the tools and training aides to assist the Regional and District Captains to be successful in their positions.
“Jayme does an incredible job in vetting and onboarding new volunteers, as well as teaching others how to do the same,” says Erika Hatfield, COS State Director, Texas. This needs to be done in a timely manner so that volunteers can be brought in to help “Build an engaged army of self-governing grassroots activists.”
The State Grassroots Coordinator’s role is that of an orchestra conductor, working to bring about a unified vision from the multiple moving parts, according to Al Torres, COS State Director, Texas.
Jayme is our 'go to' person on just about all things COS. When I joined COS Texas as a newly minted District Captain, it was Jayme who I depended on to help me learn the ways of Citizens Builder and much more. Her willingness to teach and provide much needed support helped me more than I think she realizes. Her COS story is inspiring and clear describes the true Patriot she is
~Al Torres, COS State Director, Texas
Jayme says that the best part of her position is connecting with other patriots across the state. It inspires her to see and feel the passion others have for our common cause. She sees herself as a “provider of hope,” as she believes the information she shares provides an avenue for others to help make a difference. As Jayme talks to people about Convention of States, she often shares the video, Time to Stand Up, narrated by Mark Meckler. She believes the message is a powerful tool in helping people see the importance of our mission.
Learning about the position of Grassroots Coordinator and all of Jayme’s responsibilities was overwhelming to say the least. She is a fascinating person who fulfills her multiple roles with ease. She is truly an asset to the Convention of States Project.
“It takes someone special that can hone in on someone’s skills and help them grow in that position, or help them identify a better fit, and Jayme is that special someone. She picks up the pieces if Al or I drop the ball and is the backbone to the Texas team.
There are truly just not enough words to describe now valuable Jayme is to our organization in our state as well as to other states when she provides her wisdom in terms of growing the grassroots.”
~Erika Hatfield, COS State Director, Texas
