A serious problem, years in the making, has developed in Washington: the issue of the career politicians.
Both sides of the aisle are guilty, and the only way to combat this problem is through the use of term limits. Many individual states have already adopted term limits in the state-elected positions, and the time is now at hand to focus on the federal offices.
Charles Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, and Mitch McConnell have dominated both houses of Congress for almost 40 years. The only people that benefit from career politicians like these are the bureaucrats.
The special interest forces and lobbyists do not want to lose powerful allies such as Schumer, Pelosi, and McConnell. However, much of the country suffers because of the degree of power and influence controlled by career politicians that have spent their life in Washington. They are unaware of the daily struggles that working Americans go through to put food on the table.
This is not a Republican or a Democrat issue. This is an issue where we need an independent-minded Congress that understands the plight of everyday Americans and will work for the common man in this country. We need a citizen legislature that will not be bought (and therefore controlled) by special interest or lobbying groups.
Currently, the problem is that Congress will not implement term limitations. It would mean they would soon have to re-enter regular life. For most politicians, passing such law would be akin to slaying the goose that lays the golden egg.
However, for those of us that work for a living, a federal term limit law would mean a chance to send some good people to Washington and let them devote their efforts for a few years to helping working Americans. Then, we can thank them for their service and send them back home to a better working environment that they helped create.
For those that may be unaware, another option exists for people that are desperate to see actual change take place in Washington. Article V of the Constitution gives the people and the states the power to propose constitutional amendments.
To achieve this goal, 34 state legislatures must pass resolutions applying for a convention on a particular topic. Once that happens, Congress is compelled by law to call for a convention. From there, the states will name commissioners to craft proposals.
One of the main goals for the Convention of States Project is term limits. The amendment proposal must be ratified by 38 states in order to become a reality. We must continue to work toward the goal of reaching 34 states with resolutions to trigger a Convention of States.
The fights is a marathon folks, not a sprint! Continue to make your voice heard.
