Are Special Session committees the graveyard where House bills go to die?
Governor Abbott called for a Special Session because many of the legislative items Texans want passed were not given proper consideration during regular session by House leadership. Will they repeat the same maneuvers to thwart legislative progress in Texas?
The scorecard shows the bottleneck in the Texas House.
A staff member for Texas Representative Carol Alvarado, Chair of House Urban Affairs Committee, when asked if she intends to schedule public hearings for bills still pending before her committee, responded that she has not decided. This is not an acceptable answer given the critical nature of many of this committee's bills. A public hearing on the Cap on Local Spending bill (HB206), for instance, is essential in light of the tremendous debt in Texas.
Has legislation intentionally been referred to committee simply to die?
Is the status quo in the Texas House acceptable?
Who is making decisions in Texas? We the People through our elected representatives, or Texas House leadership? Call your representative today and ask them to press House leadership to act by doing what they were elected to do: stop wasting time and allow the people a voice in the legislative process. Insist that they move legislation to the floor for a vote by the People’s representatives.
