Curious fact: William Henry Harrison is the only president to never issue an Executive Order. Of course, he was only our nation's leader for 30 days. Another curious fact: Franklin Delano Roosevelt issued 3,728 in his 12 years in office. That is just over 307 orders per year.

That was the highest rate by a wide margin, until the current occupant of the White House began issuing orders like a king. Joe Biden is up to 29 orders in 21 days. I fear for his stamina, having to write his name so often. If he kept to that pace, that would be the equivalent of issuing over 500 orders per year .

Biden's administration has attacked state economies throughout the United States with crippling expectations on business, under the guise of “COVID relief.”

This has directly impacted South Dakota, especially with the halt to they Keystone Pipeline project. “Anti-racism,” equity, and climate change issues have all been the basis for sweeping, extra-legislative overreach by the executive branch.

Well, the legislature in South Dakota has had enough. Rep Aaron Aylward has introduced legislation to codify a means by which the state can nullify and refute an executive order.

It would grant the state the ability to convene a board consisting of a wide range of state and legal representatives to consider whether the order is constitutional or improperly restrictive of the citizens of the state. Its mandate would reach into the limitation of land, state resources, constitutionally protected rights, and health, allowing the state to put the kibosh on insanely destructive orders.

Again, this issue highlights the necessity of the Convention of States. We must restrict the ability of the federal government to put its boot on the throats of the individual states through executive fiat.

This is an opportunity to reach out to your representatives and show them how South Dakota has chosen to fight back against federal overreach. Perhaps we can affect that same sort of solution to protect the citizens of Wisconsin, as well.
