On Saturday, April 23rd, at downtown Perry’s Ditch Witch Heritage Center, United States Senator James Lankford (photo left) and Oklahoma State Senator Chuck Hall (photo right) held a townhall meeting, attended by 27 local residents.

Perry patriots listened most intently to both our senators for just over an hour, and asked specific questions to each of these elected officials.

Specific to a question directly pertaining to Convention of States, U.S. Senator Lankford expressed conditional support of our organization. His stated proviso for 100 percent support of COS was if our scope was truly limited to Term Limits and a Balanced Budget Amendment. He said if the convention was open to completely rewriting the U.S. Constitution, or became a “Runaway Convention,” he would be 100 percent opposed.

While our team greatly appreciates support from our elected officials, Senator Lankford’s concerns here speak to a basic lack of full knowledge and perception, frequently found throughout state legislatures and by members of our Congress, of what an Article V convention is.

We know that any attempt to rewrite or “runaway” with the U.S. Constitution would take ascent of 34 convention delegate votes, plus, the approval of 38 state legislatures. To remedy this lack of knowledge and the spread of Article V misinformation, COS Oklahoma remains committed to educating our state elected officials at every opportunity, but especially prior to the upcoming legislative year.

We in COS Oklahoma, also remain focused on how the organization started, our current mission to help the Oklahoma state legislature and their resolution application to Congress under Article V of the Constitution of the United States, for the calling of a convention of the states limited to proposing amendments to the United States Constitution that impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and limit the terms of office for its officials and for members of Congress.

Also present at the townhall was a V.I.P. Former Perry Sheriff Charlie Hanger was the highway patrol trooper who stopped and arrested Timothy McVeigh near Petty right after the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building on April 19, 1995.
