Here are some tips to consider when writing to your legislators:

Always be respectful, and always address them with their titles.

Remember to thank them for their service to your district/state; state legislators make tremendous sacrifices to represent you.

Make it clear that you are their constituent (when you are writing to your own legislators).

Keep your letter centered around one issue (Convention of States), but feel free to tie that into related local or state issues.

Handwritten letters are cherished. If your handwriting is not easily deciphered, consider an alternative. Perhaps someone else can write it out, or as a last resort, type it yourself. But be sure to personally sign it.

The sample letters below are intended to be guidelines and are in Microsoft Word format. Feel free to adapt them to fit your style and intent. Also, communication will be more effective if a legislator does not receive multiple copies of the same letter/email.

FYI: When addressing a legislator it is standard practice to call them ‘The Honorable’ in the address section of the letter as well as on the envelope. 'Dear Senator' or 'Dear Representative' are used in the salutation.

To thank your legislator for his service:

Thank-you Letter to Previous Supporter

Thank-you Letter to Previous Non-Supporter or New Legislator

Thank-you Letter With Background Information

To ask your legislator to support the Commissioner Selection Bill or Resolution:

Please Support the Pending Legislation

Please Vote for the Commissioner Selection Bill

To thank your legislator at the end of session:
