Convention of States Oklahoma State Director John Guinn met with state leaders on April 17 in Norman.

Attendees included State Grassroots Coordinator Becky Wolfe and Regional Captains Darrell Branning, Cheryl Edwards, Kenric Johnson, David Lipham, and Larry McCall.

The focus of the meeting was restructuring the regions to allow improved support for new House Districts and making them a personal priority, along with following up on new volunteers statewide to develop relationships and form a team.

All agreed the grassroots mission of COS to build a strong engaged army of self-governing citizen activists is as important as passing an Article V resolution.

New District Captains and volunteers need to take training for their specialty in the first few weeks of assignment. When working with new DCs, it's important to reach out periodically to see how they are progressing and offer assistance.

How to assist the District Captains in following up with petition signers and volunteers to make initial contact and move them to the DC's for recruiting in a timely fashion was discussed, as well as methods to use, i.e. email, text, phone calls, and in-person contact.

Prioritizing webinars, training and meetings allows for time to work in the community. Everyone adds value to a team, and the activities each one performs helps them remain engaged, giving the DCs time to do their job.

The group discussed the importance of mentoring vs. training: Mentoring is relational, while training is technical. Mentoring builds relationships, and Larry McCall's advice was well-taken.

“If you want to fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together,” he said. COS Oklahoma wants to go far and go together.

At the conclusion of the meeting, State Director John Guinn presented Patriot Pins to newest members of the team, Kenric Johnson and Becky Wolfe.
