Today, we’re launching a new logo. We loved our old logo and look, and know many felt the same, so I want to take a moment to explain why we decided to make this move.

It’s not a change just for the sake of change. Changing a logo is a very difficult and time-consuming process—one that shouldn’t take place unless there is a good rationale to do so. A good reason to change a logo is that it’s not doing the job you want it to do—and because a simpler, more distinct version of it could do that job better.

Our first logo was a creative play on the U.S. flag, with the names of each state in the stripes of the flag and three distinct colors.

It was also extremely easy to get wrong when reproduced. If you placed it on anything other than dark colors or white, or wanted to scale it down to a smaller size, it didn’t work at all. It didn’t offer a lot of flexibility, as you can see here:

Not good.

We developed different versions of the logo to compensate, which worked well for different purposes. But that meant that shirts, pins, and even some printable documents looked different from the original logo.

They were all pretty good but lacked a sense of cohesion. And the important thing about being a brand is that whenever people see you online or out in the world, they should recognize that it’s you. Instead, people saw this:

Many beautiful things—but without that cohesion you might expect. That’s why we are giving our logo a new look. Our in-house design and communications team worked to create a clear and fresh visual identity, while making the acronym “COS” become closely associated with Convention of States.

And we’re starting today by unveiling this new logo.

It uses a simpler color palette and a more refined design, while still paying tribute to our original logo. It scales much easier and will work better in more places.

Over the next few months, you’ll see all the other visuals for Convention of States aligning around this new direction: on the website, in advertising, in print materials, and apparel. You can learn about proper use of our logo on our branding page.

But what about all the materials with the old logo on them?

Don’t worry—you can still use all of the materials with the old logo. In fact, we encourage you to use them for the next year as we transition to the new logo. As you run out of those materials or look to upgrade, you’ll be able to order new materials with our new logo.

At Convention of States, our culture revolves around the concept of “act, learn, adjust,” and we have listened to many of our volunteers. We have updated our logo to advance a clean look and feel, with a streamlined, simple design that will enable us to be instantly recognizable from the smallest pin to the largest billboard.

Our logo has changed, but our mission remains the same: to build the largest grassroots army of self-governing activists in American history
