LAME DUCK SESSION
What is a Lame Duck Session?
On years where a November election results in new Representatives or Senators being elected the legislative session days after the election and before the newly elected members take office in January are referred to as a Lame-Duck Session. The Michigan Legislature is a full time legislature that often meets in November & December. Consequently, Lame-Duck sessions occur in Michigan at least every other year.
Why Does it Matter?
If the November election results in no major power changes in the House or Senate the lame duck session can be pretty uneventful. However, if the November election results mean that the party currently in power will lose power in January, the lame-duck session can be a very chaotic scramble by the party about to lose power to quickly pass all the legislation on their agenda before the end of the calendar year.
