Coaching District Captains
As a Regional Captain it is your responsibility to:
Work with every District Captain to develop a customized strategy with goals for their district.
and to
Make a regular assessment of the status of the grassroots growth within each of your districts and make adjustments as necessary.
This is done through monthly one-on-one coaching sessions.
District Goals
At the coaching session you will either make a District goal with your District Captain or check on their progress towards a prior goal.
- Goals can be monthly, quarterly, or any interval of time that seems appropriate for the goal, but their success must be measurable and achievable.
- Goals should be focused around the key job elements of a District Captain (Calling their Volunteers, Followups, Applicants, building relationship with their legislators, having a monthly meeting with their volunteers, building their district, etc)
- It's important to allow District Captains to grow into their role. An early goal might be to (check CB and do followups 3 times a week for their first month), the next month you might add calling their assigned volunteers or legislator to their monthly goals. Gage what each DC is ready for during your conversation with them.
- When formulating goals ask the District Captain what they think should be their strategy and goals. As an RC you are there to make suggestions, and provide support/backup, but your primary goal is to develop leaders. Encourage them to step out and make their own measurable and achievable goals.
- Further education is another great monthly goal. If a district captain is nervous about talking with legislators, consider having them make a goal of going through the LL 100 COS University course.
Sample Goals for a more established District Captain:
House District: 130
Month: June 2023
Goals:
- Check Citizen Builder 3 days a week
- Process any Followups/applicants that come in within 5 days
- Call every assigned volunteer in my HD once, let them know about upcoming events and see if any of them are interested in becoming our District SMW.
- Set up a volunteer meeting for July
- Send out a reminder to my volunteers about all upcoming events they can help at.
- Attend my regional meeting & DC meeting
Keep a Record
Record each DC's District Goals in CB and send the DC a copy of them so that they and you are on the same page about what they are trying to achieve and you can refer back to their goals in the future.
