Connecticut Lobby Day Success
Lobby Day in the deep-blue state of Connecticut demonstrated a powerful grassroots commitment to an Article V Convention. More than 80 citizens and COS volunteers showed up at the State Capitol to have their voices heard. They gathered in the ornate North Lobby rotunda adorned by a magnificent 18-foot winged angel – an emblem of strength.
COS Sponsor and State Representative Jason Perillo gave an inspiring opening message stating: “We're going to keep on pushing for a COS resolution in Connecticut. Article V exists to give a voice to the people. The only reason to oppose it is if you don't want the people to have a voice.”
Representative Perillo Supports The People's Choice
He also shared what he called a “dirty little secret,” stating that he does not support term limits. However, he was quick to point out that what matters most is what the people of Connecticut want.
Jerry Cincotta, Legislative Liaison for CT-COS, spoke briefly about the importance of building relationships with state representatives, emphasizing that a Convention of States should be viewed as a nonpartisan matter.
Featured speaker – Mark Meckler, Co-Founder and President of the Convention of States Project – gave an honest discourse about where we are as a country. He noted that the tyranny of British soldiers – dragging colonists out of their beds, prosecuting without representation, and unjustly condemning them to jail – is what our founders fought against. They were fighting tyranny but – ultimately – it was a battle for ideas – for freedom and self-governance – an idea that could cost them their liberty and their lives.
“Today, we face these same dangers,” noted Meckler, adding, “The war is on and it's here in Connecticut.”
Meckler Points to the Importance of Duty
He reminded the audience of a quote from President John Quincy Adams: “Duty is ours, the results are God's.” Duty is what we do when no one is watching. It's doing what's right, what's ethical, and speaking the truth, noted Meckler.
Volunteer activist Bill Guiffredo exemplified this notion in his remarks. “I'm here for my country and my family, and to help preserve freedom for our grandkids.”
The event concluded with a robust Q&A session and a standing ovation.
Productive Meeting with Legislators
Following the presentation, Mark Meckler met with several Connecticut legislators for an engaging and productive conversation.
“It was a very meaningful exchange with our legislators,” stated COS-CT State Director Maureen Zollo. “I believe we gained deeper legislative support towards filing a Convention of States resolution in the great Constitution State of Connecticut.”
