Born in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia on the estate
named Montpelier (largest landowner in piedmont region growing tobacco)
Sickly as a child and adult, short in height
Completed classical studies at the College of New Jersey (later
named Princeton)
1772
Returned to Montpelier where he studied law (never practiced)
1774
Member of the Committee of Safety that oversaw the local
militia
1775
Commissioned as colonel in Orange County militia
1776
Delegate to the Virginia Convention
1779
Youngest member of the Continental Congress
1784
Returned to Virginia House of Delegates (congress)
Population of the United States at 3,000,000
1787
Convened what would become known as the Constitutional
Convention
1787-1788
Wrote Federalist Papers to people of New York to persuade on
ratification of Constitution

Elected to US House of Representatives
Chief supporter of Washington’s policies but later broke with
him over issues such as a national bank

Jefferson’s presidency
