On December 10, COS legislative champion Rep. Steven Xiarhos (MA-5) hosted a holiday party for constituents in his district. During remarks in which he thanked attendees for their support, he highlighted the many accomplishments of the MA COS team of volunteer activists.
Their remarkable successes had just earned them the COS State of the Year honors. As the lead sponsor and #1 supporter of that critical legislative effort, the guest of honor delivered these words of praise:
“My deepest congratulations and pride go out to my good friends Michael Arnold and Jane LaBorde and the incredible COS Massachusetts team of volunteers for earning the prestigious ‘State of the Year’ award at the recent National COS Awards ceremony.
“This recognition is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion of grassroots volunteers who are able to make such a meaningful impact. As the proud lead sponsor of the Massachusetts COS bill, I am honored to stand alongside you in this important work. Well done on this truly special achievement!”
Quite an accomplishment considering Massachusetts is among the “bluest” of blue states (actually, one of four Commonwealths) in the country.
The COS resolution made it out of committee in the last session, the group’s second effort to do so. The elegantly choreographed testimony of 20 volunteers was cited by Rep. Xiarhos as the most professional and compelling he had ever heard.
Team MA COS is counting on the old saying, “third time is the charm.” With Rep. Xiarhos’ continued support, they are eager and confident to move Massachusetts into the “W” column.
A (VERY) BRIEF HISTORY OF REP STEPHEN XIAROS
Representative Xiarhos is the son and grandson of United States Army, Air Force, and Merchant Marine Veterans. A native of the Commonwealth, he served with the Yarmouth Police Department for 40 years, retiring at the end of 2019.
During those four decades he was promoted from Patrol Officer to the ranks of Detective, School Resource Officer, Patrol Sergeant, Lieutenant, Patrol Force Commander, Detective Division Commander, and eventually Deputy Chief of Police.
He found the call to serve irresistible and in 2020, he was elected State Representative from Barnstable (MA-5) where he continues to serve with the same distinction and passion that characterized his remarkable success in law enforcement.
Rep. Xiarhos has successfully championed a wide range of legislation during his two (and counting) terms. But, arguably, his most important mission at the MA State House is that of lead supporter and advocate for COS’s efforts to call an Article V Convention of States.
