On July 12, 2022, Life With Liz Radio Show invited NH Convention of States to share some air time. You can listen to the recording of our segment here.
Host Liz Gabert knows the importance of using Article V to restore the original intent of our Constitution.
Since the structure of our federal government is cracked in many places, Convention of States is required to firm up its foundations.
District Captain Carol Petrusewicz shared her responses…
“…Convention of States is the biggest promoter of hope.”
The flawed structure prohibits great congressional candidates from accomplishing what they must. Until we fix the structure, our congressional candidates are limited in effectiveness. NH deserves better.
What if an amendment were proposed for Article 3, stating that the Supreme Court SHALL adjudicate from the original intent of the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence (verses adjudicating on the last known court case)? That would definitely correct the structure of our judicial branch.
Self-governance, people working together instead of being divided, and people uniting for the common good are what fuel the Convention of States movement. Convention of States is non-partisan and benefits every single American.
All the amendments thus far have been proposed by Congress. Convention of States is here to remind everyone about the second part of Article V, which allows “We the People” to propose amendments through the states.
Instead of applying with specific wording for one topic, like a balanced budget amendment, Convention of States has rather applied with three topics:
1. Impose fiscal restraints on the federal government.
2. Limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government.
3. Term limits on Congress and federal officials.
In 2012, NH passed HCR40, a Balanced Budget Amendment using Article V application. Some of these hero legislators are still serving us today (make sure to thank them when you see them!). However, like all the other 400 applications, we have not had a convention. This is because it is nearly impossible to have matching (same wording) applications on 34 applications.
This is where Convention of States has been successful! We already have 19 applications passed with matching language on the three topics.
We trust and count on the states to send delegates that will select the wording for each proposed amendment within those three subject matters. Choosing appropriate specific language takes a lot of back and forth discussions. A convention is the proper structure to get results. History has not shown another way for so many states to agree upon wording other than at conventions.
Our Republic contains many checks and balances. The bar is set high with 34 states needed to call a convention under Article V and 38 states required to ratify any amendment. Resulting amendments would truly be the will of the people!
That is what we are all about “We the People.”
