“Did you know,”
Liberty the Llama asked her best friend Danny Goat,
“That we are in FairFax CounTy, Virginia, the home of one of our
counTry’s Founding Fathers?
His name was GeorGe Mason.”
Danny looked confused.
“I’ve heard of GeorGe WasHinGton and thomas Jefferson, but
who was
GeorGe Mason?”
“Come witH me to PhiladelPhia,
Pennsylvania,”
said Liberty. “I wilL telL
you about Mr. Mason anD sHow you
wHere he helPed make history.”

Liberty and Danny made their way through Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.
Liberty told Danny all about Mr. Mason and how he wrote the Virginia Declaration of Rights.
Mr. Mason believed that citizens have the right to change or reform government to improve it
because the citizens are in charge.

“no,” LiberTy smiled. “We don’t have to go to WasHinGton to get
wHere we need to go.”

“Wow,” exClaimed danny.
“this is a neat builDinG, anD I see tHe Liberty
BelL over tHere!”
“this is wHere Mr. Mason made history,” said
LiberTy, poinTing a hoOf.
”His state sent him here to helP forM tHe
Constitution, our nation’s guide. He worked
witH tHe otHer founDinG fatHers.”
They arrived in Philadelphia. They stopped at Independence Hall.

Liberty showed Danny a copy of the Constitution.
“That looks like tHe letTer V,” said danny.
“yes,” LiberTy laughed, “but it also sTands for
tHe number five.”
LiberTy conTinued,
“When Mr. Mason sHared his
idea, tHe founDers tHougHt it was so amazinG tHat tHey didn’t even
arGue about it. they put it rigHt in tHe Constitution.”
“They argued about a lot of tHings, didn’t tHey?” chuckled danny.
“They did,” LiberTy said. “but not tHis. This was too imporTanT.
The people needed a way to cHange tHe Constitution and make our
counTry betTer. They can use arTicle V.”
“I see,” said danny. “But tHey
were alL great men. What
did Mr. Mason do tHat was
so sPecial?”
“Mason wanted alL of tHe american peopLe to
have a say. He proposed articLe v. the peopLe
coulD ask tHeir states to amenD
– to imProve – tHe Constitution. see?”
