Connecticut’s primary elections – for both state and national representatives – are fast approaching. And yes, they are grossly overshadowed by the national race for president of the United States. That is why we are bringing the August 13th primary state elections to your attention. Early voting begins August 5th.

Are you registered to vote in the CT Primary on August 13th?

The deadline for voter registration is August 2nd.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • These primary elections are critically important in a couple of key races where the embedded incumbent is being challenged.  See CT 2024 Voter Guide.

These primaries can help chip away at Connecticut’s one-party control, which can only strengthen our democratic process when there is broader representation and points of view.

Local elections give voters the greatest opportunity to influence how the government operates and affects our communities and personal lives.

YOUR VOTE MATTERS

On average, only 15% of registered voters turn out to vote in our local elections, noted Brenda Hamilton, Convention of States Volunteer Activist.

“I don’t think people understand how important it is to vote,“says Hamilton. “Too often, people express their displeasure about politicians and policies, not realizing that if they had voted, their single vote for or against a candidate or spending referendum could have swayed the outcome in a close race. Voting can have a dramatic effect on one’s everyday life – either positive or negative. Our Constitutional Republic gives us the freedom and responsibility to vote and that’s a very powerful privilege.”

As stated by Thomas Jefferson: “We do not have government by the majority.

We have government by the majority who participate.”

Through voting, we have the power to shape the policies and laws that govern our communities. Elected officials rely on the votes and voices of their constituents to help shape their policy decisions. By actively participating in the voting process, you can influence legislation on topics such as education, healthcare, the environment, and countless other topics on local and national levels—issues that impact our everyday lives.

MEET WITH YOUR LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES

Having relationships with your local representatives is another important way to influence policy makers.

“Local and state government offers easy access to meet with our elected officials and have meaningful discussions about issues that affect our day-to-day lives,” says Jerry Cincotta, Convention of States Legislative Liaison.“The opportunity to build personal relationships with your local representatives means that you can make your views and concerns known, especially if you disagree with elected officials. Our representatives need to hear from the people they represent. That is our responsibility and civic duty.”

ONE-PARTY RULE IS NOT GOOD FOR DIVERSITY OF THOUGHT

When one party dominates (as is the case in Connecticut) the dominant party may push more extreme policies without the moderating influences of a strong opposition. This can lead to polarization and alienation of segments of the population. It can also lead to social and economic consequences that prove to be harmful when there is no meaningful debate or resistance.

This is why it is important to vote in this next primary election – even if you think the candidate of your choice will not win.

  • Our state politicians need to be reminded that there is voter opposition to their policies and tax laws.
  •

One-party rule is dangerous for a healthy debate on important issues.

America is experiencing political unrest, similar to when our founding fathers led a grassroots resistance against a tyrannical British monarchy. Thanks to their fight for freedom and liberty, today, “we the people” have the right to vote.

Don’t sit back and miss out on this opportunity to have your voice heard. Get out and vote August 13th.

ABOUT CONVENTION OF STATES ACTION

Convention of States Action (COSA) is a nonprofit organization founded to stop the runaway power of the federal government. We believe Washington, D.C. is broken and will not fix itself. The federal government is spending this country into the ground, seizing power from the states, and taking liberty from the people.

We have a solution as big as the problem.

COSA’s plan is to urge and empower state legislators to call an Article V Convention.
