During our call on January 3, 2023, there was obviously a lot of talk about the upcoming legislative session in Austin. There are lots of moving parts and a fantastic effort to get the word out about supporting the actions there.
My attention was drawn to the myriad of things we should do while in Austin. We were reminded of the importance of building relationships with our legislators, but also with their staff. Perhaps you are not able to speak to Senator 'Smith' directly, but his/her staff is also there. Strike up a conversation with them and build that relationship.
There are legislators that we are actively supporting, but all legislators need to see that COS is there and watching them. Do a little research and find some common ground with all of them. Once bills are assigned to committees, remember, everyone on that committee becomes just as important to our cause. Let them know you are there.
Seek out your district representative and let them know you are there and why you are there. Build that relationship. Be seen and ensure that every person in the Capitol Building knows that COS was there today!
Lastly, please take a photo with them if possible, and if not, take a selfie and post it in Slack so we can tell your story. Go into the COSAction app and log your visit. If you have any questions about how or why we do this please reach out to your State Director, District Captain, etc for answers.
