Over the last year plus I have had my first true up-close look at how American politics works but, even more so, how it doesn't work. After being welcomed into the Convention of States organization, I was exposed to in-depth training materials, met a great number of like-minded patriots with a drive to help remedy some of what ails our nation.
I had the great pleasure of spending an entire day at the Georgia State Capital and spending time with our newly elected representatives as well as those long-tenured and in so doing, gaining a new level of respect for their dedication and drive to serve. I have also been allowed the opportunity to man booths at a Faith Over Fear Rally, a gun show, The Loganville Wing Fling and most recently at the Georgia State Fair. I feel honored to be representing Convention of States with their word to the American people of our chance to gain back control of our country's direction. Yet one thing has become abundantly clear, neither the American citizenry nor their elected officials are going to make this easy.
On Monday night 10/9/23 I attended the Walton County Georgia GOP meeting and was disappointed in the lack of organizational acumen on display, the lack of respect towards the speakers by some in attendance (D111 Rep Rey Martinez, D46 Sen. Bill Cowsert and D17 Sen. Brian Strickland) and an equal lack of respect for other members in attendance (attendees carrying on conversation while the guests were speaking for example). Those in attendance were also predisposed to shouting questions (as opposed to raising a hand to be called upon), raising their voice to be heard over another who was already speaking; it was at times kindergarten-like. I won't address in detail how I was basically dismissed by Mr. Cowsert as soon as I mentioned COS. His only comment to me was a muttered statement about a runaway convention. I did not get to finish speaking due to being shouted over by a gentleman who is running for Walton County Sheriff; not a good look. Let me be clear about one thing, I have experienced this dysfunction at other party related events for both parties such as at town halls and rally's; I am not singling out the Walton group by any means.
On the positive side, Rey Martinez provided some good insight into the Democrat game plan to flip the Georgia house by 2030. I honestly cannot recall one item of note that Mr. Cowsert brought forth that was memorable except a complaint of little to no media cooperation. I was, however, more than a bit impressed with Brian Strickland I must admit. Mr. Strickland is currently working on 3 bills for next session and 2 of the 3 will have long-term positive effects on Georgians. The first bill Mr. Strickland spoke of was a jail reform bill that he did not drill down on. The 2nd bill Mr. Strickland spoke on elicited an enthusiastic murmur from those in attendance and is centered on restructuring the Georgia foster care system from the ground up and allowing for a 90-day fostering process.
Last but not least, the 3rd bill he is working on will establish a statewide apprenticeship program that businesses can sign up to participate in; this one excites me as I work in the trades myself and have been frustrated at the lack of such a program.
This has only motivated me to attempt further in-roads with at least Mr. Strickland and Mr. Martinez. They are doing good things, but I feel they need help getting the word out.
