Texas Capitol
It was 2014, and the Obama administration had just announced sprawling reforms to the National Security Agency.
These seem likely to have provided the impetus for the un-American Intelligence Community we have seen on display, specifically with the Russian collusion hoax and the first impeachment of President Trump.
Meanwhile, Congress pushed through a $1.1 trillion spending bill just to keep the government afloat for another nine months. Obama was launching airstrikes in the Middle East, and Washington was out of control.
Midway through the second Obama term, Michael Deffendall answered Senator Ted Cruz’s invitation to American patriots to actively work to change the direction of the country. Michael began as a delegate to the GOP Precinct Convention. Today as a Precinct Chairman, he continues his political efforts within the Bexar County GOP.
The Texas legislature passed the Convention of States resolution two years before Michael’s joining the movement. He plunged in as a COS District Captain, doing the work that is so vital to COS: informing and recruiting patriot volunteers.
Mr. Deffendall stepped up again in 2018 when asked to serve the Convention of States as Legislative Liaison for COS Texas. He now works on strategy and developing ideas for liberty-minded legislation.
Some of these initiatives include:
- Ensuring election integrity.
- Reforming executive overreach of elected officials, including judges, county executives, mayors, and even the governor.
- Ending taxpayer-funded lobbying who push for increased spending and reduced freedoms for Texans.
When asked what effect the 2020 Presidential election might have on prospects for the acceleration of the COS movement, Michael was optimistic.
“It’s not too late for America to change course,” he said. But he also cautioned, “There are a lot of terrified people out there.” The closer we get to the 34-state requirement, the more resistance we will feel from the bureaucratic establishment.
Michael believes the greatest barrier COS faces is ignorance. This unawareness of what the Convention of States represents leads to a lack of confidence that there is a viable way forward. We need to work even harder to reach people with the truth, helping them to see that there is a far better way to ensure that government is working for the people.
We are no longer governed by representatives acting in our best interests. Rather, a runway federal bureaucracy is governing by fiat and executive orders. This in turn unleashes the tyranny of crippling regulations and taxation at a time when Americans are in terror of the pandemic, and the economic wellbeing of many is in serious decline.
We need the freedom to live without the uncertainty of what the next capricious administration will bring.
Now is the time to rally the country and call for a Convention of States. There is no more worthy cause today than uniting under the cause of freedom. Work with people within the political parties.
Talk to people in your civic groups and clubs. Reach out to those who need to hear that it is possible to once again hear freedom ring.
Are you willing, like Mike Deffendall, to step up and be a champion for liberty? Volunteer today!
