The end of summer in South Dakota means county fair season. These are traditional gatherings where friends, family and neighbors all come together to celebrate harvests, livestock and summer projects. Along with these homegrown achievements there is a sense of patriotism.
Our Convention of States volunteers tapped into that sentiment and found a hotbed of liberty loving S.D. citizens at the country fair scenes this month.
During the first two weekends of August, COS patriots were actively sharing the power of Article V in four different communities across western South Dakota. There were booths set up at the Fall River County Fair, Custer County Fair, Bennett County Achievement Days, and Scotty Philip Days.
Many folks in these rural communities showed passion for liberty and were eager to sign petitions. Some were so eager to join the movement they climbed onto parade floats on the day following signing up.
“The love of liberty is contagious at these rural community events,” said Jackie Rausch, COS volunteer. “When people see the three pillars of term limits, fiscal responsibility and reduce federal overreach they jump at the chance to share the info with their friends and family.”
These small communities together collected over 290 petitions for a Convention of States. Petitions are all sent to their respective state legislative representatives to show support for action in Pierre.
