This update is going to all assigned volunteers in Kansas. Join our bi-weekly Zoom call for Kansas volunteers. The next call is Thursday, August 15 at 7:00 PM CDT. We will be discussing the latest on Thompson v. Masterson, the election and more. A link to the call is below.

County Fairs

School is starting this week and the county fairs are now over. We decided to have a presence at some fairs we have not been before. We were in Kansas City, Paola and Overbrook. We found the folks at these fairs to be supportive and even enthusiastic about signing our petition. Kansas farmers, ranchers and small business people know the tyranny of the federal bureaucracy and are glad to see someone doing something about it.

We can only do these fairs with grassroots support. It does not take a large volunteer team and a fancy booth to work these rural fairs. Start thinking about the fair in your county and set a reminder next April to check in to being a not-for-profit commercial vendor at your fair. Contact  Grassroots Coordinator Connie Davidson at connie.davidson@cosaction.com about your local fair and we will help you recruit volunteers, provide handouts, blank petitions and signage. COS will even pay the nominal event fee. Volunteer Fonda Spencer was able to get us into the Osage County Fair in Overbrook just days before the 2-evening event. Fonda and the team did a great job collecting petitions and recruiting new volunteers.

Primary and General Election

The August 6 primary election has resulted in a potential net gain for COS. Several legislators opposed to COS either lost or decided not to run and can be replaced by COS supporters. Some of these are unopposed in the general election however most COS supporters must still win in November.

Checkout our 2024 General Election Candidate List to confirm the position of candidates in your Senate and House Districts. We encourage you to contact your candidates to thank them for their support or challenge them to defend their opposition. If they are undecided you can start feeding them resources to help them understand that the founders intended the state legislatures to take action to rein in an overactive national government. We are working from the state team but constituents have more influence.

Constitution Day

Constitution Day is September 17. Kansas schools receiving federal funds are required to conduct education programs on the Constitution of the United States on September 17 or an alternate date if the 17th falls on a non-school day.

This year, the Convention of States Foundation is a sponsor of the Harvey County Constitution Essay Contest for the second year. Two Newton area high schools will be participating this year. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top essays. Congratulations to District Captain Michael Fellows for working with the schools, area businesses and local legislators to create this opportunity for students and their families.

We know some of you are hosting Constitution parties in September. It's a great way to introduce COS to your neighbors and enjoy some neighborhood fellowship. Invite your neighbors over to watch the 20-minute video, Introduction to Convention of States Presentation, narrated by Mark Meckler. Keep it simple, serve a snack, show the video, answer any questions and collect petitions.

2024 State Fair

We will be back to the Kansas State Fair, September 6-15. This year we are moving to the Meadowlark Building. Ten days, from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. We are recruiting for one or more 4-hour shifts with 4 volunteers per shift. Shifts are 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM, 1:00 - 5:00 PM and 5:00 - 9:00 PM. Volunteer sign-up HERE
