A resident of Washington since 2011, Kira received her J.D. from Lewis and Clark Northwestern School of Law in 1995. She practiced law for five years as a trial attorney while her husband Michael (USMC) was stationed in California. When the opportunity came in 2001 to stay home and homeschool the boys, she jumped at the chance and never looked back. Kira joined COS as a State Content Writer in early 2021, writing numerous articles for the Washington state and national websites.
Content ranged from interviews of dedicated COS volunteers to an analysis of a public debate between former State Director Eric Minor and the John Birch Society. A favorite article covered in-depth COS State Director team member Brenda Dutton, who participated in flipping the leadership of the Spokane County GOP in 2022.
After assisting Eric Minor in procuring thirty-five sponsors for the COS resolution in the 2023-2024 legislative session, Kira took on the role of Legislative Liaison.
In 2000 and again in 2002, Kira indulged her love of music and original career goal of becoming a concert pianist, competing in the Van Cliburn Competition for Outstanding Amateurs in Fort Worth, Texas.
These days, outside COS, Kira helps run three small businesses with her husband, raises chickens and a garden, leads a small group at her church, and tries to keep up with her husband and two adult sons in their never-ending discussions of theology, philosophy, history, and politics.
So . . . why COS? Here is a quote from a recent talk she gave:
“Finally, I get to Convention of States. . . I have never seen an organization like this one. COS has an ethos of love and service. It’s in our core values. COS volunteers help one another. They are not cynical, they are hopeful; not despairing, but joyful; not shrinking, but active. In other words, they are the same Americans – cut from the same cloth - as all who have made our country truly great, with both well-trained minds and deep and sensitive hearts.
I’ll bet there’s not one cynic here who thinks it can’t be done. You are here today because you believe in freedom, and you want to help save our country. So you came. God bless you.”
