Organizational Overview

Convention of States Action is a 501©(4) grassroots nonprofit organization committed to enacting action to restore self-governance in America.  The Convention of States Project (conventionofstates.com) strives to call a Convention of States under Article V of the U.S. Constitution to propose amendments to limit federal power.  Work for COSA may also involve projects for COSA’s affiliates, including Citizens for Self-Governance dba Convention of States Foundation.  

Position Overview

The Communications Director works with all COSA departments facilitating internal and external communications.  This position recruits, supervises, leads and trains staff that are part of the Communications Department.   This includes, but is not limited to, Web development, Social Media, Blog, Video and email communications.  Branding, Graphics, media, email marketing, direct mail marketing,  and other mass communications for the external relations department falls under the specter of this position as well.  The successful Communications Director has a vision for the way the National Team, External Relations and the Grassroots teams in the states communicate efficiently and effectively.


Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Executive Team to establish a vision for the Communications of both Citizens for Self-Governance, The Convention of States Foundation as well as Convention of States Action
  • Learn the roles and responsibilities of the Communications Department members and work with them to ensure their success in time management, project load, SMART goals, and professional development.
  • Be the Communications Department head including providing leadership, strategy, project management, evaluation and adjustments within the department in a growing and changing environment.
  • Work with other department heads to maintain a culture of cooperation and success among the organization.
  • Adjust to changing priorities and workflows keeping the Communications team on task and focused on their priorities.
  • Lead regular team meetings to coordinate tasks, solve issues, and enhance the culture and performance of the department.
  • Provide organizational stability and clear expectations for the department
  • Work with the External Relations Department to manage and report on email and direct mail fundraising efforts. Plan, execute, and coordinate email campaigns on an ongoing basis to reach fundraising goals.
  • Project manage advertising efforts on radio, TV, and other digital media from start to finish.
  • Lead the department through example by adhering to the principles of Servant Leadership.
  • Hold regular one-on-one meetings with Communications Department team members to measure success of goals, solve problems, and assist in professional development.
  • Train and develop new members of the Communications team in accordance with COS growth plans and goals.

 

Skills

  • Knowledge of communication methods used by COS including email, social media print, radio, television, video writing, Blogs, web development, Graphic design, advertising, mobile devices and traditional media.
  • Leadership skills including mentoring, organizational development, Servant Leadership, and management.
  • Knowledge of current trends in media and communication
  • Excellent command of technology and communication tools, such as Slack, MailChimp, customer relationship management (CRM) tools, Excel, Word, Trello, Zapier, and Salesforce
  • Attention to detail
  • Flexibility to take on roles for special projects as needed.

Pay

Convention of States offers pay commensurate with experience and skills. This is a full-time position that includes health benefits and vacation.
