The Article V Amendment High School Scholarship Competition has come to a close. State Finalists who competed on October 26, 2018, at Faith Academy in Marble Falls, Texas were Courtney Burrows, Ashlyn Wilson, Cullen Schoppa, Hannah Sizenback, Kali Faulkner, Alejandro Moreno, and Aaron Marks.
The State Winner of the $1,000 Young Patriots Scholarship Award is Hannah Sizenbach from Faith Academy in Marble Falls, Texas.
Hannah’s proposed amendment is:
Congress shall re-establish the balance of powers and reinforce the power of the people they represent. Congress may exercise the right to vote on any and all Executive agency regulations. Regulation changes must receive 2/3 vote of both chambers of Congress. Executive Branch funding shall not incur national debt.
All competitors received a signed copy of Governor Greg Abbott’s book, Broken but Unbowed, a copy of the U.S. Constitution signed by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, and a medal for advancement to the state final round of the competition at Faith Academy.
Awards were presented by Texas Representative Terry Wilson. Judges for the event were Mikael Garcia from the Texas Public Policy Foundation and Paul Hodson, Regional Director for Convention of States Action.
The Second Place prize went to Alejandro Moreno from J. Frank Dobie High School in Houston, Texas. His proposed amendment is:
Reassert the rightful place of the executive branch regardless of the stewardship theory of the modern presidency. Abolish the already implied power of the executive branch to be able to have control of 15 federal departments. The executive branch will only have the power to appoint to the original 4 departments. Any other regulatory policies that would otherwise be enforced by the bureaucratic state are now left to the discretion of Congress.
The Third Place winner, Aaron Marks from Faith Academy in Marble Falls, Texas, proposed:
“The sixteenth article of amendment to the U.S. Constitution is hereby repealed.”
Thanks to Melanie Kriewaldt who spearheaded the competition and did the hard work of pulling together all the pieces to make it a success! As a Convention of States supporter, she has helped spread the word to her high school students and others around the state about the vital importance of the amendment process.
