Make no mistake about it: the Democrats have staked their entire campaign on abortion, abortion, abortion.
Three nights into the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC), and the theme is inescapable. Abortion is omnipresent, both rhetorically and literally.
Yes, literally.
This year’s DNC offered free abortions and vasectomies to attendees from a mobile “health clinic.” The abortion van, administered by Planned Parenthood, treated 20 to 30 patients over the first two days of the convention.
It’s the ultimate test of loyalty for the emerging Kamala coalition: to gain entry to the DNC, one must literally walk past abortion centers on wheels. If someone can’t handle that, well, they’re likely unprepared for what they will encounter inside the convention.
From the president of Planned Parenthood to “victims” of the post-Roe wave of abortion bans to that cringe-inducing, Taylor Swift-quoting governor, everyone it seems has found reason to remind us about, you guessed it, abortion, abortion, abortion. Touting the party's views on reproductive rights appears to have been a prerequisite for getting on stage.
A handful of examples:
“We cannot call ourselves a free nation when women are not free…. Donald Trump wants women to be less free and pregnancy to be more dangerous.”
“When Roe V Wade was overturned, a generation of young people lost… freedom.”
“Donald Trump took away our rights. But he can never take away our power.”
“Tonight, let’s talk about freedom, including our most intimate freedom — choosing when and if to have children and have a family. ‘Project 2025’ [The Heritage Foundation’s mandate for conservative leadership] would turn the entire federal government and bureaucracy into a massive machine; it would weaponize it to control our reproductive and personal choices.”
And on and on.
You get the picture.
I’ve been following the DNC so that you don’t have to, and my single biggest takeaway is that the Democratic Party has found its hill to die on.
Yes, the Obamas spoke, the Clintons spoke, and even President Joe Biden offered a few parting remarks. But all you really need to know is that abortion has been everywhere all at once at this year’s event. The Democratic Party now closely aligns the issue of abortion with what their newly crowned standard-bearer might describe as “fweedom,” and they have made up their minds to ride this stance to the ballot box in November.
