I'm a 22-year-old state leader volunteer, and I'm about to tell you why that's relevant to this post.
As I was working on a promotional project yesterday, it hit me that my generation is part of one of the most politically dense times in history. Many of those in my generation and the millennial generation before mine are very much political in their thinking.
However, this political mindset is more along the lines of strict political bias. Everyone picks a side. In our climate, however, everyone is on either side of the street, while D.C. traffic drives nonchalantly by as we argue our point of view, never meeting halfway to block traffic.
So, There's a Problem
We all have a political party that frames the way we vote and support candidates for office. That's essential. However, it hasn't hit a lot of people in my generation yet that the mindset of division isn't working.
It isn't helping the problems in the swamp of D.C., and as long we stay divided, it's not going to help Americans unify to undo the mess in our nation's capital.
It's easy to feel passionate about your affiliation, but the Constitution is the banner for all of us. Imagine what could be accomplished when that is realized across the party lines?
I am fearful, because I don't see many members of these generations picking up torches in defense of constitutional principles.
But why is that important?
Our Solution
Because we are next, and we are the ones on the battlefield now. Our children will grow up in whatever America we create for them in the here and now. So what nation will this be?
Will we let the land of opportunity and liberty sink to its knees, because we didn't speak in defense of the basic principles upon which this nation was founded?
Advice that has served me well is to find some friends in the older generations that serve or have served in some way. Shake their hand and ask for their wisdom as you move forward. The best way to know how to speak up is to learn from those who have already done so.
It's important to vote your beliefs, my friends, but it's not enough. Voting is necessary. Defending our constitutional republic is your duty the Founders prepared you for.
To speak bluntly, young Americans need to care, and we have to decide if we are going to make our stand for the sake of our own children, or are we going to let a proverbial swamp dictate their future?
You may be asking, “What can one person do?”
We have Colonel George Mason to thank for our ability to rein in our government through the Article V process. One man spoke up and raised his voice. So think about that again.
You can do much.
“My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” -John F. Kennedy
