Saturday, September 17 commemorated our U.S. Constitution and the  value of citizenship with this federal holiday. In 1911, schools in the state of Iowa first recognized Constitution Day. By 1940, President Roosevelt declared “I am an American Day” to be held in May. In 1952, Congress changed the name to Citizenship Day and moved its date to September 17.

In 2004, the day was renamed Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.  Simultaneously celebrated, they serve as a reminder to all Americans that to be a legal citizen of the United States of America, one must also uphold the U.S. Constitution to enjoy the full benefit of living in this great country.

At its inception, some say the U.S. Constitution was divinely inspired since it appears its ideologies were not practiced in the world at that time. The wisdom by which these founders wrote this document suggests an understanding of human nature, for a form of governance for and by the people, and a determined means to protect an individual’s rights.

Unfortunately, there’s been a slow and steady decline to truly appreciate the privilege we, as individuals, have in being a citizen of this country.  Some thankfully continue to hold a reverence for the insights of our Constitution and its process of amendments, that strive to protect individual and collective liberties.   These citizens realize the importance of the rule of law, the responsibility to defend our country from enemies, foreign and domestic, and maintain a view of liberty, as one nation, under God.

May we take the time to count the blessings we have received because of this unique document. Let us reflect on the ways we, as citizens, can uphold this law of the land to strengthen our country collectively in the present and for future generations.
