Organizational Overview
Convention of States Action is a 501©(4) grassroots nonprofit organization committed to enacting action to restore self-governance in America. The Convention of States Project (conventionofstates.com) strives to call a Convention of States under Article V of the U.S. Constitution to propose amendments to limit federal power. Work for COSA may also involve projects for COSA’s affiliates, including Citizens for Self-Governance dba Convention of States Foundation.
Position Overview
Responsible for overseeing the financial operations of COSA and related organizations (including, but not limited, to Convention of States Foundation, CSG Action, and Defending Liberty). A successful candidate will have a broad, current knowledge of nonprofit accounting and tax matters that apply to our organizations. The candidate should be familiar with 501©(3), 501©(4), and 527 nonprofit organizations and be a strong leader and highly organized project manager.
Responsibilities
Prepares analytical reports for the Senior VP of External Relations on giving trends (further enhancing data from Salesforce dashboards)
Works with the legal team to ensure transactions are coded properly in the accounting system so that state charity, lobbying, and campaign finance reports can be prepared in a timely manner
Manages the external audit and tax return preparation process for Convention of States Foundation and Convention of States Action. Audits should be completed by May 31st each year, and Forms 990 should be prepared by July 31st.
Prepares Form 990s for CSG Action and Defending Liberty.
Prepares or reviews monthly account reconciliations, including for bank accounts, investment accounts, prepaid expenses, and inter-company accounts.
Prepares monthly snapshot, financial statements, and commentary on the financial statements.
Prepares a weekly flash report summarizing the financial activity for the previous week (including YTD cumulative numbers)
Ensures expense reports are prepared in a timely manner. Reviews and approves credit card expense reports on a monthly basis.
Prepares quarterly analyses of spending by vendor
Manages the financial aspects of COSA’s Online Store, particularly focusing on sales tax compliance and analyzing profitability of the store
Budgeting
Prepare and monitors the organization’s annual budget in conjunction with senior management
Assists the External Relations Department with preparing budgets for funding proposals
Provides counsel to program staff on budget and financial matters, including assisting with programmatic budgets for events or campaigns.
Banking and Investments
In conjunction with the COO, manages the investment portfolio of contributed investments. Monitors account values compared with donated costs to determine if/when securities should be liquidated.
Payroll
Processes bi-weekly and semi-monthly payroll via the organization’s payroll system
Reviews and approves timecards submitted by staff via the organization’s timekeeping system. Utilizes monthly time records for allocation of personnel costs between the various entities.
Requirements/Abilities
Ability to effectively manage staff and contractors and communicate critical financial information in a virtual environment

Pay
Convention of States offers pay commensurate with experience and skills. This is a full-time position that includes health benefits and vacation.
Location
This is a remote position. Applicants may be located anywhere within the United States where they are able to adequately perform their job duties.
Experience
Applicants should have at least 5 years of professional experience in accounting, a significant portion of which should involve controller-level responsibilities with nonprofit organizations.
