The theme for the day was "Stop the Warehouses, Save Our Farms!" This was a natural fit for COS.  Self-governance is central in the COS mission statement: “To build an engaged army of self-governing grassroots activists.” The local citizens and farmers at “Ag Day” practice this principle daily as they fight against government efforts to chip away at the rural character and beauty of their community. On the national front in farming operations, did you know that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has implemented a rule requiring all cattle and bison that are moved across state lines to be tagged electronically and tracked? Did you know that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) wants to send teams of federal employees to farms to test for the Avian Flu in workers (!) and livestock? Did you know that the USDA’s actions regarding wetlands have so exasperated farmers that a Senator from South Dakota has introduced legislation to lessen the bureaucratic overreach? When our nation was formed as an independent and free country, there were only four cabinet positions under President Washington – Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of State, Secretary of War and Attorney General. There are currently 15 cabinet positions. Every day, more and more Americans realize it’s time to pare those departments down considerably. At “Ag Day” we met concerned citizens from both sides of the political aisle who were eager to sign the COS petition. COS is truly working for a bi-partisan solution to what ails this country. Let’s keep working to get New Jersey on board for calling an Article V convention!
