**LEGAL GUIDELINES FOR NONPARTISAN BLOCKWALKING**

**These guidelines are specific to nonpartisan blockwalking and should not be used for**

**blockwalking in favor or in opposition to any political candidates or parties. Blockwalking**

**to support or oppose candidates must be specifically approved for your state by the COS**

**Legal Team //before //it is undertaken.**

Thank you for your interest in blockwalking for COS!  Please remember that while you are\\
blockwalking, you represent COS.  Be kind and respectful to everyone you meet, even those\\
who don’t appreciate your efforts.  While blockwalking for COS, please abide by the following\\
rules:

1. Follow local rules and customs.\\
2. Don’t wear apparel promoting political candidates or other causes outside of COS.  For

example, you should not wear MAGA hats or the like.

3. Keep it nonpartisan.  The focus should be on COS as an //issue//.  You can discuss the

political issues that are facing us today, but don’t tell people who to vote for or express\\
support for any candidate or political party.

4. Don’t solicit donations to COSA or other causes. If someone asks if they can make a

donation to COSA, you can direct them to the donation page on the COS website\\
(conventionofstates.com/donate).  Please do not accept checks or cash from people.

5. Don’t put anything in mailboxes (or take anything out).  It’s a federal crime to put

material in a mailbox that is not properly addressed mail.

6. Respect “No Trespassing” signs and the like.  Be on the lookout for pets.\\
7. Only walk during reasonable hours.  Don’t knock on doors before 8am and avoid being

out after sunset.

8. Don’t go into someone’s house, even if you are invited.\\
9. Always be aware of your surroundings.  Stay in well-lit, visible areas and remain close to

other team members.  Err on the side of caution. If you feel threatened in any way,\\
immediately remove yourself to a safe location and call 9-1-1 if appropriate.
