This amendment to the Constitution imposed term limits on the President of the United States. \\ \\ This amendment was prompted by the election of Franklin Roosevelt to four presidential terms. During the last of his elected terms, Roosevelt died in office, totaling 12 years and one month as president. \\ \\ Prior to the ratification of this amendment, most presidents honored the unofficial precedent set by George Washington, who decided not to pursue a third term. However, after the presidency of Roosevelt, Americans learned their lesson. \\ \\ Fearing what founding father [[https://press-pubs.uchicago.edu/founders/documents/a1_8_12s27.html|George Mason]] called an “elected monarchy,” the 22nd Amendment states, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”\\ \\ Once 36 of the 48 states had ratified the amendment, it was added to the Constitution. \\ \\ Today, as we celebrate the fight to make a “more perfect union,” we should be thankful for the amendments that have placed limits on federal power.\\ \\ But we should not stop there.\\ \\ The time is ripe for Americans to consider term limits for Congress. \\ \\ Career politicians stalk the halls of D.C., never having held a job outside of the swamp, and entirely out of touch with the American people.\\ \\ Surely there is a maximum number of terms for federal officials and members of Congress that 38 of the states can agree on. Calling an Article V Convention of States would open the door for this discussion. \\ \\ Congress will never propose an amendment to limit itself, so it is up to the people and their state legislatures to rein in the federal power. \\ \\ Use your voice this National Term Limits Day to call for a Convention of States!
