One of the key pillars of the Convention of States project is to limit federal overreach.\\
\\
The “For the People” bill (HR1) is a prime example of overreach. First introduced in the 116th Congress, it failed to become law. Now, it’s reintroduced in the current 117th Congress.\\
\\
Among other things, the bill is an attempt to nationalize all of our voting processes, including an expansion of the vote-by-mail option. Considering our recent election, what could possibly go wrong?\\
\\
This bill is based upon some assumptions that Congress has the right and duty to make changes to our election laws. Article 2, section 1 of the Constitution clearly gives the responsibility for the way elections are conducted solely to the state legislatures.     \\
\\
So, why would our politicians want to impose a new set of national election laws? One possible answer is to achieve even greater centralized power and control over the states.\\
\\
And, why would the individual states want to allow this to happen? Probably because compliance means the ability to continue receiving federal funds that come with strings attached.\\
\\
With any luck, the bill will face a vigorous debate and require modifications to severely limit its scope. However, we should not assume this will happen. Nor should we expect that the bill will just go away and not reappear in a future session.\\

Only an Article V Convention of States can propose the constitutional amendments needed to prevent the type of federal government overreach that is exemplified by HR1.
