Our American history is a compendium of responses to events which have prompted actions.

America’s first response after its Independence was to the Barbary pirates of the West African nations engaged in slave trade by capturing ships at sea and demanding ransom for the crews or keeping and trading them as slaves. 

President Thomas Jefferson finally got fed up with their practices and instituted the United States Navy. The U.S. Marine Corps hymn recites “to the shores of Tripoli” in referring to this war.\\

The most impactful response in American history, nevertheless, was to the contradiction of a nation professing freedom and justice for all when it practiced slavery. That response, of course, resulted in over 600,000 deaths in America’s Civil War. \\
\\
So, our history has been a series of responses to events.\\
\\
In 2020 we have been inundated with a multitude of disparate events ranging from political intrigue to governmental rows, constitutional conflicts, and health emergencies.\\
\\
The litany of unseemly events even within the past six weeks have been unnervingly untoward. They seem to defy the most logical explanations--demagogic edicts by various governors, ridiculous mandates that blatantly violate America’s First Amendment rights, contradictory “science” which prompted the shutting down of a booming economy, riots pursuant to a policeman murdering a suspect, looting, burning, and destruction of private property, marauding gangs inflicting pain and mayhem, erosion of confidence in police--all eagerly fed by a voracious media more interested in making the news than in reporting it.\\
\\
America is tired--really tired! Tired of the constant drone of edicts which are discordant with the principles of our Constitution. Tired of the misrepresentations from those who are supposed to be "experts." Tired of being told we are nation guilty of systemic racism. Tired of the “entertainment elite” telling us how truly despicable America is. Tired of spoiled white kids rioting in the name of their “cause.”

We are tired of not being able to work. Tired of being told it is a violation if we go to our houses of worship. And tired of being guided into some global community that neutralizes our American heritage.\\
\\
Our representatives have forgotten that they have been elected to serve We the People. They have allowed our capitol to devolve into a swamp.

This swamp has been perpetuated by the constant reelection of a cast of characters of both parties who are solely loyal to those who will finance them. 

For example, Nancy Pelosi has been in Washington, D.C., for 33 years, and Chuck Schumer has been there for 34 years. America's condition is a direct reflection of their reign of poor service.\\
\\
They have produced an ineffective and non-responsive government. Consequently, we have the obligation to limit their terms, and we can do so via an Article V Convention of States.  

Term limits will put an end to an increasingly incestuous relationship between lobbyists and members of both parties. Term limits will also constrain the burgeoning bureaucracy that such governance has spawned.\\

A couple of observations from Alexis de Toqueville and Thomas Paine are appropriate here:

As ever, 2020 will be written and perhaps seared into our history.  It may not be very settling at the moment, but one thing is certain about the American psyche: we are at our best when things seem to be at their worst.  

The most important element of that uniquely ethereal American composition is the knowledge that Americans have a well-written Constitution with clearly defined objectives and processes bolstering them.\\
