The battle is better known as Bunker Hill. Historians have misnamed the hill for the last 247 years.\\ \\ On Breed's Hill, a couple of hundred yards down from Bunker Hill, the Continental Army, under command of General Israel Putnam and Colonel William Prescott, built a redoubt of dirt and old trees. The new army had built this small compound overnight. A more terrible spot could not have been chosen. Bunker Hill was high enough to avoid the British warships and their huge cannons. Breed's Hill was not so fortunate. They were within range of the naval bombardment with devastating results The brave men who occupied the redoubt fought with voracity. They gave no quarter to the mass of trained British soldiers attacking that fateful day. The Continental Army fought until they ran out of musket balls and powder. The remaining soldiers swung their rifles and used them as clubs until the last defenders were able to escape to Bunker Hill. Twenty-eight brave souls gave their lives holding the British at bay until the redoubt was cleared.\\ \\ That day, the British Army received a great beating from the citizen-soldiers. Some twelve hundred British regulars were killed and wounded. It was a loss that made the British command realize these rag-tag civilians were a force to be reckoned with in the game of warfare. Two hundred and forty-seven years ago the world changed. This was the beginning of the United States of America – a country that was born out of the desire for freedom.
