WHO DECIDES?

A crucial opportunity for We the People to decide which candidate will represent us is to vote. Most importantly, we have a right to do so created for us in the US Constitution under Article 1 and reinforced by Amendments 12, 15, 19, 24, 26 as well as the Civil Rights Acts of 1870, 1960 and 1964 (1,2).

Founding Father John Adams added a sense of duty in voting when he wrote “We electors have an important constitutional power placed in our hands; we have a check upon two branches of the legislature,” Boston Gazette August 1763 (3).

Taking advantage of your right to vote is very important in 2022 because those that win do so by a very slim margin. This is because on average 48% (1978-2018) of registered voters participate in the midterm, non-presidential, elections (4).

Therefore 25-26% of those who vote usually decide the winner of any election. The 2022 elections may include those to serve on your school board, town council, mayor, and county committee. In federal congressional districts, you will choose your delegate to the House of Representatives.

Your friends with NJ Convention of States encourage you to VOTE in 2022; Early in-person from October 29 to November 6, with a mail-in-ballot by November 8, or in-person at the election polls on the 8th.

For more information see: NJ.Gov Elections Voter Information Portal

All registered voters in NJ will receive a sample ballot, whether they requested mail-in ballots or not (5). Search for your candidates’ websites to learn more about their values and ideas on governance. Listen to debates between the candidates. Decide the reasons to cast your vote for the people you choose based on your values.

In the words of Noah Webster, ‘in selecting men for office, let principle be your guide. Regard not the particular sect or denomination of the candidate–look to his character’(6).

‘Who Decides?’ is also the motto for the call to action of our Convention of States (COS) movement. Many of our readers are already supporters from completing a Petition to call for a Convention of States . Please review this page, Convention of States Grassroots Activist Roles, to consider how you may become more involved.

We all have a circle of family and friends who value what we believe. May we ask you to forward this GOTV appeal to your family and friends? There is a handy link at the bottom of this page.

Thank you,

COS NJ Leadership Team
