After spending days negotiating behind closed doors in secrecy, Democratic and Republican leadership in Congress finally released their much-anticipated stimulus bill, and, man, is it a doozy.
In addition to funding the federal government, the $2.3 trillion bill has been said to contain $900 billion in coronavirus relief. Yet, upon reading portions of the bill, one will find that the majority of “coronavirus relief” isn't relief at all.
In typical swamp fashion, the bloated 5,593-page omnibus contains all kinds of pork barrel spending that has absolutely nothing to do with the coronavirus pandemic or helping the American people.
Below is a list of just a few of the entities/policy initiatives that will receive funds under the current bill:
Oh, and did I forget to mention that in addition to being negotiated behind closed doors, members of Congress only had a few hours to read the bill in its entirety before it went to the House floor for a vote with no debate whatsoever?
It goes without saying that our constitutional process is broken. Even during a pandemic with millions unemployed and businesses shuttering their doors, the swamp just can't help itself.
This is why it is all the more crucial to call a Convention of States.
Calling a convention will allow us to add amendments to the Constitution that will enact much-needed reform, such as an amendment to balance the federal budget.
This will prevent disastrous bills like the new omnibus from ever making it to the floor of the House or Senate and force lawmakers to make financially sound decisions like millions of families across the country do every month.
It will also provide us with the opportunity to drain the swamp of career politicians, who have spent decades getting rich off the backs of the American taxpayers and who refuse to acknowledge the ever-growing threat the national debt poses to future generations.
It's time the American people finally put our government in check, and that, ladies and gentlemen, begins with a Convention of States.
