The U.S. national debt now stands at $29 trillion, or about $287,859 per household.

Despite this enormous sum, both Democrats and Republicans Congress just voted to raise the debt ceiling.

It wasn't since the Tea Party movement that some elected officials at least paid lip service to fiscal responsibility. Now, both parties are ready and willing to spend taxpayer money regardless of the impact on American families or future generations.

It didn't used to be like this. Here's how this administration compares to others, according to CNS News:

“Back in 1989, the year that President Ronald Reagan left office, there were 89,178,355 income-tax-paying households in the United States, according to the IRS. At the end of January that year, the federal debt was $2,697,957,000,000,” the report revealed. “That means the federal debt then equaled approximately $30,253 per income-tax-paying household.”

Even adjusted for inflation, the amount would only equal $69,437 per household. “In real terms, the current federal debt of $287,859 per income-tax-paying household is more than four times that much.”

Our nation's finances are on a collision course with disaster, and we can't trust Congress to right our sinking ship. It's up to We the People to turn things around, and we can do it with an Article V Convention of States.

A Convention of States is called and controlled by the states and has the power to propose constitutional amendments. These amendments can force Congress to be fiscally responsible by requiring a balanced budget every year without raising taxes.

That way, our representatives will be forced to cut all the wasteful and unnecessary spending they use to get reelected, and do the hard work of cutting the programs and “services” that can be found nowhere in the Constitution.
